Background
The IL-6 receptor–signaling system is made up of two receptor chains and downstream signaling molecules. The IL-6 receptor (IL-6R) constitutes the IL-6-binding chain, which occurs in two forms, 80 kDa transmembrane and 50-55 kDa-soluble IL-6R (sIL-6R), whereas 130 kDa gp130 constitutes the signal-transducing chain. Both of these proteins belong to the cytokine receptor family with a Trp-Ser-X-Trp-Ser motif[1].
